Just a reminder of the Nashville Chapter meeting this Tuesday night, the
26th at 7:00 PM at Ellington Ag Center. The speaker at the meeting will be
Eileen Hennessy, Director of Land Protection at The Land Trust for
Tennessee. Something new this month will be a pre meeting hike. Robbie
Benson, who works at Ellington Ag Center, will lead an hour hike around the
campus starting at 5:30 PM. Meet at the Region 2 building, where we have
the meeting, and bring water and maybe something to munch on. If it rains,
this hike will be cancelled.
If you signed up to bring an item for the Nashville Chapter themed backpack,
please bring it to the meeting. Also, we will be handing out donation forms
for annual meeting auction items, so you might think of folks you do
business with who might donate something for a great cause.
Raymond Myers asked me to pass an invitation to join his hike over the
Columbus Day weekend:
Trip Leader, Raymond Myers of Nashville Chapter. 615-385-9644. Appalachian
Trail 20.3 mile hike north of Hot Springs, NC over the Columbus Day weekend.
Strenuous.
Travel on Friday afternoon/evening, spend night in/near Hot Springs, NC.
Saturday morning have breakfast in Hot Springs, use shuttle from Bluff Mtn
Outfitters to Allen Gap.
>From Allen Gap, hike 5 miles up 1,200' towards Camp Creek Bald to Little
Laurel Shelter for the night.
Sunday hike 12.5 miles to Flint Mountain Shelter. Along the way stop at
Camp Creek Bald lookout tower, take the stunning new 1.6-mile,
exposed-ridge, 360-degree view, trail relocation, and stop at Jerry Cabin
Shelter for lunch.
Monday (Columbus Day) hike 3 miles to Devil Fork Gap, catch Bluff Mtn
Outfitters shuttle back to Hot Springs, drive home to Nashville.
Expect nice cool hiking weather, leaves turning colors, meeting some of this
year's south-bound thru-hikers, and beautiful views.
First day will include a fairly short, but strenuous hike up the mountain
side.
Second day will continue that hike and include 10 more miles over mountains,
balds, cliffs, and ridges, before 2 miles of steep downhill
to Flint Mtn Shelter.
Third day will be an easy downhill. We should be back in Hot Springs for
lunch, leaving plenty of time for the drive home.
The weekend is right between hunting seasons, but blaze orange
stillrecommended.
Shelters may be full, so be prepared to camp out. We will practice
"Leave No Trace." Will go rain or shine.
Brent Morris is leading an activity during National Public Lands Day and
could use your help. National Public Lands Day is *Saturday, September 30*.
One of our NPLD projects this year will be at Bear Hollow TWRA (Tennessee
side of the Walls of Jericho). Our plan is to continue (and hopefully
finish) building a new section of hiking trail for a day loop near the
Tennessee Walls of Jericho trailhead parking lot. The terrain is fairly
flat.
We'll meet at the new Bear Hollow TWRA Walls of Jericho trailhead parking
lot (Tennessee side of Walls of Jericho) located off Hwy 16 at 9:00 am.
Please try to arrive on time. We'll have refreshments, free NPLD
posters, and lots of trail building fun! We'll plan to work until about
2 or 3 pm. If you need to leave earlier, that's OK too.
Please bring a lunch, plenty of water, and work gloves. TWRA and our
regional TTA chapters will furnish trail building tools but if you have your
own, please bring them.
In the event of rain showers, we'll still plan to work. However, work will
be suspended (or cancelled) in the event of sustained lightning.
Directions to the event (from I-24) are:
*Take I-24 East to Hwy 50 (Exit 127)
*Take Hwy 50 West to Hwy 16
*Take Hwy 16 South (turn left) and go to Walls of Jericho Parking Lot
*Walls of Jericho Parking Lot is located just past mile marker 29 on right
side of Hwy 16 about a mile or so from the Alabama state line.
For an idea of travel time, it's a little over an hour drive past Manchester
(I-24 exit 110).

Hope to see you there!

Finally, you should be registered by now for the TTA Annual Meeting October
20-22nd. The deadline is fast approaching (October 1st!). If you've never
been to one, and don't plan to attend, you just don't know what you're
missing. This year it's at Land Between the Lakes, and has many activities
planned. The highlight of the meeting is the Saturday night auction,
benefitting the Breakaway program of the Cumberland Trail Conference. See
the September newsletter or the website for details.

That's it for now. Hope to see everyone at the meeting and hike before!
